I was listening to a song today which posed a provocative question. The context was a person crying out to God because she was going through a season of great difficulty. She reflected on the flowers in bloom and how God clothes them in beauty (see
Matthew 6 or
Luke 12). Then she considers November. Do the flowers know why they cannot bloom when they are in November? Even flowers must wait to bloom, and this is God's providence. Sometimes it is difficult to wait. We wonder why it must be so. Yet God is not inactive. He is preparing us for what only He knows awaits us. In 1 Corinthians, Paul writes:
No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him.
Isaiah contains a similar passage in chapter 64:4
From of old no one has heard
or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
who acts for those who wait for him.
Again and again in our courtship, verses like these have been a great encouragement. Even now, remembering what God has done in the times of waiting, how He has brought things about and acted on our behalf, I am deeply encouraged.
